Shapes Song for Kids

Jump into circles, squares and triangles with Ray: shape-hunt games, tracing pages and tips for learning shapes at home.

Ray from LumiLand

Toddlers usually match and fit shapes, like a circle into a shape sorter, before they can name them. The CDC lists "Draws a circle, when you show him how" as a milestone by 3 years, and HealthyChildren.org (AAP) lists "Copies square shapes" at 3 to 4 years. On LumiLand, Ray, who loves jumping games, hosts shapes, and a shapes song for kids is simply one that names each shape and links it to something your child can see.

Coming soon to LumiLand

There isn't a LumiLand shapes song yet. Our first episode is the ABC song for toddlers, and The Color Song is coming soon. You don't need to wait, though. Shapes are all around your home, and the games on this page need nothing more than a few toys, a snack or a piece of chalk.

Basic shapes to teach toddlers

Begin with three: circle, square and triangle. They look clearly different, and they turn up everywhere. Plates and wheels are circles, windows and crackers are squares, and a slice of pizza is a triangle. Once those feel familiar, add rectangles, ovals, stars and hearts.

Toddlers learn shapes best with their hands and bodies, not only their eyes. Holding a block, running a finger round its edge and counting its corners all help a shape make sense. That's why Ray likes to jump into shapes: moving from a circle to a square makes the difference something your child can feel.

How to use a shapes song together: sing, hunt, trace

Sing. Make up a short line to any tune you know: "Circle, circle, round and round, roll it, roll it on the ground." Shapes songs for toddlers work because they repeat one idea with a clear action.

Hunt. After singing about a shape, go looking for it. Hold up each find and say its name together. If you're teaching colours and shapes to toddlers at the same time, take "a red circle" as a double win.

Trace. Finish with a calm moment. Trace a shape in the air, on a steamy window or on paper. Our free shape tracing pages give little hands a clear outline to follow, and they make a nice wind-down after jumping around.

When do toddlers learn shapes?

Like colours and letters, shapes come at different ages for different children. Many toddlers can match or sort shapes before they say the names. If you'd like to know what's typical and how to keep it playful, read our tips article on when toddlers learn shapes.

The most helpful thing is simply talking about shapes during the day. "Your sandwich is a triangle!" takes two seconds, and over time those small moments add up.

Games to play at home

No screen needed. Try one today.

Ray's shape hop

Draw a big circle, square and triangle with chalk or tape on the floor. Call out a shape and jump into it together.

Shape hunt

Pick one shape and look for it around the house: a round clock, a square cushion, a triangle sandwich. Count how many you find.

Snack shapes

Cut toast or cheese into circles, squares and triangles. Name each shape before it gets eaten.

Feely bag

Put a few shaped blocks in a bag. Let your child feel one without looking and guess the shape.

Finger tracing

Trace shapes on your child's back or palm with a finger and let them guess. Then let them draw one on you.

Shape sort

Mix up blocks or paper cut-outs and sort them into piles by shape. Ask which pile is the biggest.

Questions parents ask

Which shapes should I teach my toddler first?

Start with a circle, a square and a triangle. They are easy to spot at home and look clearly different from each other. Rectangles, stars and hearts can come next.

My toddler calls every shape a circle. Should I worry?

No. Mixing up shape names is a normal part of learning. Keep naming shapes as you play and point out the corners and sides together.

Can we learn colours and shapes at the same time?

Yes, once your child knows a few of each. Try simple combinations like 'find the red circle'. If it feels like too much, go back to one idea at a time.

Is there a LumiLand shapes song?

Not yet. Our first episode is the ABC song and The Color Song is next. Until then, the shape games and tracing pages here work without a screen.

How do I make shapes feel real, not just pictures?

Let your child hold them. Blocks, plates, crackers and boxes all have shapes your child can touch, trace with a finger and talk about.
